For the third year in a row, the owners of Ma & Pop’s Country Kitchen in Bethel Park are hosting a special late-November event.
Steve and Erica Diethorn said in a statement they “are aware that many of our fellow residents are enduring financial and emotional hardships during these unusual times. In response, we are offering a place to go this Thanksgiving for those who will otherwise be alone, and a free Thanksgiving dinner for those who need one.”
The restaurant, located at 2840 South Park Road, will offer dining for a maximum capacity of 16 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 26, and deliveries will be made from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. To make a reservation, which is required, call 412-595-8451.
Anyone who is interested in donating a dessert or volunteering for the event, or who has questions, can call Erica at 412-670-1212.
The day is sponsored by the Diethorns, Breadworks, Giant Eagle, Gordon Food Service, Nappie’s Food Service, the Rotary Club of Bethel Park and U.S. Foods. When Steve and Erica opened the restaurant in early 2018, one of their early ideas involved thinking ahead for Thanksgiving.
“We started talking about it right away,” Erica said. “So the plan started in January, February, and the more we talked about it we thought, gosh. We can really do this.”
As the year progressed, they received plenty of support from their restaurant supply vendors and from customers who made contributions to help offset the cost of the meals.
The 2019 event was a success, with volunteers on hand to help throughout the day, including musicians who dropped by to entertain diners with seasonal songs.
“We definitely like to step up and do things for other people, without expecting anything in return,” Steve said beforehand. “That’s the big thing.”
