Mt. Lebanon has received a Safe Communities America designation from the National Safety Council, placing it among only 30 municipalities in the country to earn the accreditation.

The application, which took more than a year to prepare, was underwritten by First Student Inc., the leading school transportation provider in North America.

The Mt. Lebanon Police Department led the process, which involved the creation of a coalition of local agencies and groups with a strong interest in improving safety for all at work or at play, and culminated in a visit from Safe Communities site reviewers earlier this month. Reviewers specifically cited the “Look Up Lebo!” traffic safety campaign as a strong program.

Municipal manager Keith McGill said the designation and model for continuous improvement is a natural fit for the community, citing the first paragraph of the application.

“Mt. Lebanon prides itself on providing vanguard schools and services to all who choose to live, work, play and grow within the community. We have a history of collaboration among the residents, businesses, schools, hospital, the many municipal departments and authorities, and other organizations that make this a place where people enjoy visiting, conducting business and raising a family.”

Along with the police department, founding coalition members include Mt. Lebanon’s fire department, public information office and public works department. Others are Mt. Lebanon School District, Medical Rescue Team South Authority, St. Clair Hospital, Outreach Teen and Family Services and FirstGroup, First Student’s parent company.

The process is highly data-driven, and the coalition consistently will review accident, injury and death reports while looking for ways to improve safety locally. Initially, the coalition focused on three areas for improvement: traffic and pedestrian safety, opioid abuse prevention and workplace violence prevention. Fall prevention was identified as another area the coalition seeks to initiate improvements in the future.

Representatives from National Safety Council and Safe Communities America, based in Illinois, will visit Mt. Lebanon to present the accreditation later this month.
