If a flock of pink flamingos shows up near your door, thank the Bethel Park High School girls’ volleyball team.

And of course, the well-wisher who had the plastic birds placed there.

“Flocking,” as the volleyballers call it, is their primary fundraising activity, and members of the team were in their usual spot during Bethel Park Community Day to explain all about it and demonstrate what an arrangement of Phoenicopteridae – surely, you remember that from junior-high biology class – looks like in any given yard.

“The flock will arrive under the cover of darkness, and the birds will migrate just as quietly the following evening,” the team’s website assures everyone. “A greeting letter accompanies our feathered friends explaining their arrival, and gives the recipient your personal message.”

The volleyball team joined dozens of other community organizations for Saturday’s event, which drew a good-sized crowd in semi-cooperative weather at the Bethel Park High School campus. Also featured was the ninth annual Pasta Too Rev ‘Em Up for Kids Car Cruise, raising money for recreational opportunities for local youngsters.

If “flocking” seems like an interesting way to celebrate a special occasion or have a good laugh while supporting young athletes, visit www.bpgirlsvolleyball.com/home/flocking for details.
