Upper St. Clair commissioners declared May 19-25 as National Emergency Services Week.
Commissioner Ron Pardini said during the commissioners’ May 6 meeting Tri-Community South was one of the finest services in the country and presented the ogranization’s EMS Director Nora Helfrich with a proclamation.
The board also recognized several USC High School students, including Alexis Feldman, who was honored for attaining the Girl Scout Gold Award.
Feldman wanted to raise awareness about mental health and organized yoga classes at the high school as her personal project.
Members of the USC High School Speech & Debate team were recognized for its win at Pennsylvania High School Speech League Championship.
Also honored were USC High School swimmers Jack Fitzpatrick, Josh Matheny, Reese Samuel and Ryan Senchyshak for their first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay at the PIAA Boys’ Swimming Championships. Matheny was also recognized for his first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Howard Zelik, a resident who lives on Shenandoah Drive, asked the board to consider widening Morton Road from Boyce Road to the fire department sub-station when the road is resurfaced.
Zelik said the lanes are 96 inches wide, narrower than other roads. Depending on the size of the vehicles, Zelik said cars sometimes go over the curb to pass oncoming traffic.
Assistant township manager Mark Mansfield said the road is scheduled for work this year and widening of some parts of the road is planned.
Township manager Matt Serakowski said it would be difficult to improve the road enough to bring it up to code. He said the road will be widened within the existing right of way.
In other business, the board encouraged interested residents to apply for the open commissioner-at-large position. The vacancy was created by the resignation of Commissioner Russell Del Re, and the individual appointed will serve the remainder of Del Re’s term, which expires Dec. 31, 2019.
Residents interested in being considered for appointment to this vacancy should send a résumé and letter of interest to Matthew R. Serakowski, Township Manager, Township of Upper St. Clair, 1820 McLaughlin Run Road, Upper St. Clair, PA 15241.
The application materials must be received at the manager’s office no later than 4 p.m. May 14.
