Washington Health System launched its vaccination clinic Monday at the Peters Township Community Recreation Center.

“They’re using one of the basketball courts, half the gym,” township manager Paul Lauer reported at that night’s meeting of Peters council. “That clinic is going to run six days a week, 10 hours a day. Today, they did just shy of 250 vaccines.”

The health system’s intent at this point, he said, is to vaccinate 300 people a day at the site.

“Their hope is to be able to ramp that up, and having stopped over there today,” Lauer said about his visit to the center, “they certainly have the capacity to do far more vaccinations there than what they did today.”

He said eligibility for receiving vaccines at the clinic is effectively limited as far as geography.

“Washington Health System defines their service area as Washington and Greene counties, and so the vaccines that are being given at this location are going to be limited to Washington and Greene County residents,” he said.

From his observations, registering for vaccinations through the health system’s website, whs.org, is a straightforward process.

“I would encourage anybody in Peters Township to go on and register at that site,” he said, “because I think that it’s a good possibility for people here to be able to get their vaccines.”

On Sunday, the community recreation center also served as the site of a second vaccination clinic in conjunction with Hilltop Pharmacy, a business in Pittsburgh’s Allentown neighborhood owned by Peters Township resident Patrick Lavella. The first one took place Jan. 24.

“Initially, we did a thousand shots. So this was the opportunity to get that second shot,” Lauer said, noting on Feb. 21, about 1,250 people received inoculations.

“It went amazingly smoothly,” he told council. “They could have easily done twice that number with the way things were set up, and I think Hilltop Pharmacy and the Peters Township Fire Department deserve a lot of credit for being able to make that run so smoothly.”

In January, council members agreed to offer township-owned locations as vaccination sites.
