Mia Gorman grabbed a spot in the PIAA singles tennis tournament to be held in November at the Hershey Racket Club. The Bethel Park High School freshman took third in the WPIAL Class AAA championships.
In the consolation match to determine the final state qualifier, Gorman dispatched Amelia Haley, 6-3, 6-1.
Gorman advanced to the Final Four in the tournament before falling to NA’s Ashley Huang in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
Gorman opened tournament action with a 10-2 victory against Regan Sommariva and a 10-3 triumph against Jenn Bell from Latrobe.
Gorman was the section runner-up to Bethany Yauch of Baldwin, who battled Huang for the WPIAL title. Yauch also defeated Haley, 6-2, 6-0, in the semifinals.
Kat Wang of Peters Township, who won the Section 4 crown a week earlier, succumbed to Haley in the quarterfinals, 10-2. Wang had beaten Franklin Regional’s Hannah Yan, 10-5, in the opening round of the tournament.
Mt. Lebanon’s Lauren Masteller also advanced to the quarterfinals but lost to Yauch, 10-0. Masteller had outlasted Latrobe’s Addison Kemerer, 11-10 (7-5), in first-round play.
Lebo’s Camilla Buch and Chartiers Valley’s Kara Joseph were eliminated in the first round of the tournament. Buch succumbed to Bell, 102, and Joseph, who was the Section 4 runner-up, lost to Elle Santora from Shady Side Academy, 10-6.
The quest for the WPIAL doubles title commences this week with section tournament play on Sept. 26-27.
Winners as well as other qualifiers advance to the championships set for Oct. 3-4 at North Allegheny High School. The Class AA finals will be played at Shady Side Academy.
