The WPIAL released pairings for the boys basketball tournament and several area teams were among the top-seeded squads that will battle for a trip to the Petersen Events Center to compete in the championship games set for Feb. 27.

While Mt. Lebanon (16-6) and Upper St. Clair (19-3) received first-round byes along with No. 1 seed Butler (17-4) and No. 2 seed Fox Chapel (21-1) in Class 6A, Bethel Park (13-8) and Peters Township (13-8) had playoff appointments for 8 p.m. Feb. 18.

The Indians will take on Hempfield (12-10) at Mt. Lebanon while the Black Hawks will face North Allegheny (11-11) at North Hills.

Should the Black Hawks win, they would face Lebo in the quarterfinals set for Feb. 22. It would be the third meeting between the two section rivals. Lebo scored the last 10 points to beat Bethel Park 61-59 on the Black Hawks’ home court. In the rematch, the Blue Devils ran away with victory.

While Lebo is seeded No. 3, USC earned the No. 4 seed. The Panthers will play the winner of the Pine-Richland (14-8) vs. Connellsville (8-14) first-round game being played Feb. 18 at Fox Chapel.

The Class 6A final is set for 9 p.m. Feb. 29.

In Class 5A, Chartiers Valley (18-4) earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament behind Penn Hills (18-4). Mars (17-5) and Thomas Jefferson (15-7) are the No. 3 and 4 seeds. All received first-round byes.

The Colts, who are coming off a thrilling come-from-behind win against Lebo, will face the winner of the Shaler (13-9) versus Gateway (10-11) game being played at 8 p.m. Feb. 17 at North Hills.

South Fayette (15-7) will face Franklin Regional (11-11) at 8 p..m. Feb. 17 at Peters Township. The winner will face Mars in the quarterfinals set for Feb. 21.

The Class 5A final is set for 9 p.m. Feb. 28. The top six teams out of District VII advance to the PIAA tournament.

In Class 3A, Seton LaSalle (15-6) battles McGuffey (15-7) in the first-round Feb. 14.

In Class 1A, Bishop Canevin (17-5) earned the No. 2 seed behind Vincentian Academy (18-4). The Crusaders will play Feb. 20 against the winner of the Monessen (10-12) versus Union (13-8) game.

The finals are set for 7 p.m. Feb. 27.
